Mehluli “Gomez” Dube to Host Annual Influx Dance Workshop Promoting Unity and Fighting Substance Abuse

Seasoned choreographer Mehluli “Gomez” Dube is set to host his annual Influx Dance workshop at the Siziba Youth Centre in Njube on January 23. The initiative aims to promote unity among dance creatives while addressing drug and substance abuse in the community.

The workshop was born from Gomez’s passion for dance and his desire to create a safe, creative space for people to explore movement. He welcomes dancers and movement enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to professionals, and anyone interested in challenging themselves while connecting with like-minded individuals.

“As one of Zimbabwe’s outstanding choreographers, sharing my skills allows us to grow together and improve the sector. The workshop is inclusive, with a focus on creativity, self-expression, and community-building,” Gomez explained.

Participants can expect a dynamic experience, including layered movement exercises to refine technique, rhythmic phasing to explore new musicality, unpredictable transitions to encourage spontaneity, and improvisation exercises to tap into inner creativity.

Gomez sees dance as a tool to address community challenges. He believes fighting drug abuse and child marriage requires education, community engagement, and support. Apart from the workshop, he plans to visit local schools to facilitate sessions on the risks of substance abuse and early marriage. He also encourages community leaders to promote positive alternatives and create supportive environments for vulnerable populations.

Having discovered his passion for dance at age five through the Rays of Hope programmes, Gomez emphasizes the importance of reviving youth centres. He believes these centres can keep children engaged after school and away from harmful influences.

The Influx Dance workshop continues to be a platform where creativity meets social impact, empowering young people while strengthening community bonds.
