Rising Afro-Jazz Star Paivepo Unveils Debut Album ‘Kutandara Ne Paivepo’ at Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre

Friday night in Harare promises to be a milestone for Afro-Jazz enthusiasts as Davis “Paivepo” Nyamhandu, a first-year Ethnomusicology student at the Zimbabwe College of Music, launches his 11-track debut album, Kutandara Ne Paivepo, at the Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre. Born and raised in Chitungwiza, Nyamhandu brings a fresh fusion of traditional African rhythms and contemporary jazz influences, showcasing the rich tapestry of his musical heritage.

Currently in his second semester pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Ethnomusicology, Nyamhandu chose the Zimbabwe College of Music—alma mater to luminaries such as Clive “Mono” Mukundu, Charles Charamba, Pah Chihera and Hope Masike—because he values both theoretical mastery and practical artistry. “I might have the voice,” he explains, “but I needed to learn how to read and write music, play instruments, engage an audience and even dance. This holistic approach will elevate my performances.” The College’s executive director, Rachel Jera-Chigwanda, praised his dedication and creativity, calling the launch a reflection of the vibrant artistic energy cultivated at the institution.

Nyamhandu’s versatility is one of his defining strengths. Fluent in English, Ndebele, Shona, Swahili and Nyanja, he composes melodies in Shona before translating and adapting them into other languages. This multilingual approach was inspired by the internationally acclaimed Afro-Fusion band Mokoomba. His songs become cultural bridges, celebrating African identity, unity and love.

The album’s title, Kutandara Ne Paivepo (“Wander with Paivepo”), was inspired by a fan during one of his live performances and signals the beginning of a themed series. “This is only the first edition,” he said, “there will be a second, third and more, each with a unique expression of the same journey.”

Earlier this month, Nyamhandu previewed his upcoming album during the Winter Warmer Concert, where his band Paivepo delivered an electrifying set. Their performance left the audience in awe, giving a strong hint of what to expect at the official launch. With heartfelt lyrics, layered instrumentation and a strong stage presence, the group offered a taste of the energy they plan to bring to the Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre.

Nyamhandu’s love for music began at a young age, singing in church during primary school. His talent matured during his time at Mavuradonha High School, where he became fascinated by musical instruments and performance. After completing high school, he pursued a national music certificate before enrolling at the Zimbabwe College of Music, continuing to refine his craft with academic and hands-on experience.

The highly anticipated launch event will be graced by celebrated guitarist and producer Clive “Mono” Mukundu, who will serve as guest of honour. A star-studded lineup, including jazz maestro Josh Meck, Kudzi Kayz, Trancer MK, Prince Avalon and Band, Wamambo and Afrimba, will perform alongside Nyamhandu, making it a truly unforgettable night for Zimbabwean music lovers.

As the curtain rises and the spotlight turns to Davis “Paivepo” Nyamhandu, audiences will witness not just the unveiling of a debut album, but the emergence of a promising new voice in Afro-Jazz—one grounded in tradition, enriched by study and driven by an unshakable passion for music.
