Sniper Storm Applauds New Generation of Zimdancehall Artists and Their Monetisation Success

Zimdancehall veteran Sniper Storm has praised the new generation of artists for striking the right chords with audiences while successfully monetising their work. The chanter highlighted that social media and easy access to digital platforms have created opportunities for emerging stars to showcase their music and reach wider audiences. Currently touring the United Kingdom alongside Jah Hanief, Sniper expressed admiration for young talents like Hulengende, Junior Spragga, and Mr. Attention, noting their growing followings and ability to turn their creativity into income. He encouraged the industry to embrace these changes and support the new wave of Zimdancehall artistes.

Reflecting on the evolution of the genre, Sniper contrasted the current landscape with his early days in urban grooves before it developed into Zimdancehall. He recalled the difficulties of obtaining studio time and filming music videos, challenges that limited exposure and growth at the time. Today, artists can perform, live stream, and document their work in real time, reaching audiences far beyond traditional channels. Sniper emphasised that artists from his generation should take advantage of technology to repackage and share their work, noting that while many past performances were not recorded, his own catalogue is now available online.

Sniper also highlighted the importance of energy and relevance in sustaining a career in contemporary music. He stated that while his generation paved the way for today’s stars, the baton has been passed to younger artists who are thriving in a more technologically advanced and connected environment. He maintains regular contact with fellow veterans such as Roki and Ngoni Kambarami to reflect on the changing dynamics and explore strategies for maintaining relevance in the evolving music industry. Sniper remains optimistic about the future of both emerging and established artists, stressing that innovation and adaptation are key to success.

As part of his UK tour in February, Sniper has lined up three shows in Stoke on Trent, Derby, and Leeds. He described the response from fans as overwhelmingly positive, noting that long-time supporters continue to celebrate his music while younger Zimbabweans born abroad are embracing the new generation of artists. These performances offer an opportunity to assess the ongoing relevance of both his work and that of his peers. Sniper’s catalogue includes hits such as “Love Yemusoja,” “Tsvigiri Muhuchi,” and “Hubhinya,” which continue to resonate with audiences and affirm his legacy in Zimdancehall.

By recognising the achievements of younger artists while reflecting on his own journey, Sniper Storm underscores the growth and resilience of Zimbabwean urban contemporary music. His insights highlight how technology, monetisation, and creativity have transformed the industry, creating opportunities for sustained success across generations. The veteran artist remains a guiding figure, bridging the past and present while celebrating the rise of new kings and queens of Zimdancehall.
