Tendai Chakanyuka’s Memoir Launched to Acclaim

Renowned archivist and historian Joyce Jenje-Makwenda has praised broadcaster and author Tendai “The Sweet Thaaang” Chakanyuka for her bravery following the launch of her memoir, The Sweet Thaaang: It’s an Attitude, on Sunday. The book, published by Royalty Books, offers an honest and deeply personal account of Chakanyuka’s life, tracing her journey from childhood to the present.

Speaking at the launch, Jenje-Makwenda commended Chakanyuka for openly sharing her story without embellishment.

“You know, you are very brave… It’s not easy to go into yourself and say to people, this is who I am. The good thing about how Tendai wrote this book is that she did not sugar-coat anything. She just wrote as it is,” she said.

She noted that the memoir challenges societal norms, highlighting how Chakanyuka often refused to conform to traditions she did not fully understand. Jenje-Makwenda added that the book adds valuable insight into the fields of arts, culture, and broadcasting.

During a discussion with master of ceremonies Tich Mataz, Chakanyuka reflected on the long journey to completing her memoir, revealing that the idea was conceived seven years ago but faced several challenges along the way.

“The dream was born about seven years ago when I embarked on the book, but in between, I think I dropped the ball,” she said.

“But in the last two years, when I said I needed to sit down and get this out of the way, I managed to finish it. I think it’s really been amazing and I’ll do it again.”

Chakanyuka’s memoir captures her deep-rooted love for music, sport, and pageantry, offering readers a glimpse into the experiences that shaped her life and career. She also shares the origins of her well-known radio name, “The Sweet Thaaang,” which stemmed from an unexpected encounter with a fellow broadcaster.

The book’s editor, Phillip Chidavaenzi, applauded Chakanyuka’s efforts, emphasizing the need for more local journalists to document their stories, as is common practice worldwide. He noted that the memoir carries important life lessons drawn from Chakanyuka’s personal and professional journey.

With its candid storytelling and engaging narrative, The Sweet Thaaang: It’s an Attitude promises to be an inspiring read for those interested in media, culture, and self-discovery.
