Thando Nkiwane Says Content Creation Has Become the Driving Force Behind the Modern Creative Industry

The creative industry has undergone a major transformation as digital platforms continue to reshape the way artists connect with audiences. Social media has become more than just a place to share content, as it now serves as a powerful platform for building careers, attracting brand partnerships and reaching global audiences. National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) Outstanding Theatre Actress Thando Nkiwane believes this shift has permanently changed the entertainment landscape. The Bulawayo-based actress and content creator, popularly known as Dramatic Miss, says content creation is no longer an optional addition to an artist’s career but has become the heartbeat of the modern creative industry. Her own journey demonstrates how embracing digital platforms while remaining committed to traditional theatre can create new opportunities for growth and success.
Known for her humorous skits inspired by everyday conversations and relatable social issues, Dramatic Miss has successfully established herself as one of Zimbabwe’s rising digital creators. Her content resonates with audiences because it reflects real-life experiences in an entertaining and authentic way. While continuing to perform on stage, she has also built a loyal online following that appreciates her storytelling and creative personality. Her ability to balance theatre with digital content has allowed her to remain relevant in an industry that is constantly evolving. This combination of traditional acting and online creativity has positioned her as an example of how artists can successfully adapt to changing audience preferences.
Dramatic Miss explained that her move into content creation was influenced by noticeable changes in audience behaviour. Like many performers working in theatre and film, she observed declining attendance at live productions and screenings as more people consumed entertainment online. Instead of resisting the changing landscape, she decided to embrace it by producing short-form digital content designed specifically for social media audiences. That decision opened new doors, allowing her to reach thousands of viewers who may never have attended one of her stage performances. Her willingness to adapt has become one of the defining characteristics of her growing career.
This year marked another important milestone when she received the National Arts Merit Award for Outstanding Theatre Actress for her role in the theatre production Ipi Ntombi. The prestigious recognition highlighted her excellence as a stage performer while also proving that success in traditional theatre and digital content creation can go hand in hand. Rather than choosing one path over the other, Dramatic Miss has demonstrated that artists can excel across multiple creative platforms. Her achievement reflects the value of versatility in today’s entertainment industry. It also reinforces the idea that embracing new forms of storytelling does not diminish the importance of traditional performing arts.
Reflecting on the evolution of the creative industry, Dramatic Miss believes every artist should acknowledge the influence of social media. She said content creation has become the new normal because it provides artists with direct access to audiences, clients and collaboration opportunities that were once difficult to secure. According to her, digital platforms also give creators the freedom to express themselves authentically while allowing audiences to engage honestly with their work. She explained, “I think content creation is the new normal. You cannot claim to be an artist and not acknowledge that social media has taken over. That’s where you attract most of your audiences, clients and collaborations. It has become an amazing addition to the industry because it allows you to just be yourself and show the world that you can really create what you want and do what you want. It also allows people to either like or not like the work that they see being produced by you.” Her comments reflect the growing role that social media now plays in shaping artistic careers.
Collaboration has also become an important part of Dramatic Miss’s success as a content creator. She has worked alongside fellow digital creators including Chik Aljoy, Shammy Moyo, Langa Ndimande and Young Steazy to produce entertaining content that appeals to diverse audiences. According to her, these partnerships create opportunities for creators to combine different talents and perspectives while producing fresh and engaging material. She believes audiences enjoy seeing creators from different backgrounds come together to produce something unique that would not have been possible individually. These collaborations also strengthen engagement between creators and their followers, helping to build stronger online communities.
Dramatic Miss noted that collaborations are particularly valuable for emerging content creators seeking greater exposure. She pointed out that working with established personalities introduces newer creators to much larger audiences, helping accelerate their growth. Speaking about her own experience, she explained that collaborating with Shammy Moyo, who has around one million followers across social media, significantly increased her own visibility despite having a much smaller audience. These partnerships have helped her attract more attention while expanding her influence within Zimbabwe’s digital entertainment space. She believes collaboration remains one of the fastest and most effective ways for creators to develop sustainable careers.
Beyond expanding her audience, working with other creatives has also contributed to her personal and professional development. Dramatic Miss said every collaboration challenges her to become more versatile by adapting to different creative styles and approaches. She enjoys learning from fellow creators while finding ways to complement their strengths during each production. This willingness to grow has enabled her to produce stronger and more engaging content over time. By remaining open to learning from others, she continues to refine her craft while delivering fresh ideas to her audience.
Many people will also remember Dramatic Miss for the unforgettable acceptance speech she delivered during this year’s Nama Awards ceremony in Harare. Realising that many audience members were unfamiliar with her because she comes from Bulawayo, she used the moment to introduce herself in a confident and memorable way. “Zvekuti hamundizive zvenyu ka, nhasi matondiziva. Ndinonzi Thandolwenkosi Nkiwane. I come all the way from Bulawayo, koNtuthu ziyathunqa,” she declared, receiving loud cheers from the audience. While her performance in Ipi Ntombi earned her the prestigious award, her confidence and ability to connect with the audience ensured that her acceptance speech became one of the evening’s standout moments. It reflected her natural stage presence and her understanding that memorable moments often come from authenticity and perfect timing.
In addition to her work as an actress and content creator, Thando Nkiwane also contributes to the growth of Zimbabwe’s performing arts sector through leadership. She serves as chairperson of the Zimbabwe Theatre Association while also working as an arts administrator, demonstrating her commitment to supporting the industry beyond her own performances. Her career reflects the importance of embracing innovation while preserving the value of traditional theatre. Through her achievements on stage, her success as a digital creator and her leadership within the arts community, she continues to inspire both established and aspiring creatives. As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, Dramatic Miss stands as a powerful example that talent, adaptability and consistency remain the foundation of lasting success.
