Victor Nyakauru Showcases “Negritude” at AKAA Art Fair 2025 in Paris

Mixed-media artist Victor Nyakauru presented his latest work at the 10th edition of Also Known As Africa (AKAA) at Carreau du Temple in Paris. The art fair, held from Friday to Sunday, marked a decade of highlighting African art and the work of its diaspora.

Nyakauru collaborated with REM Project, a gallery from Puerto Rico, to present his exhibition titled “Negritude.” He explained that the project builds on the Negritude movement, which began in Paris in the 1930s as a cultural and political expression of black resistance. “We are continuing with that movement, putting it into the 2000s, 2020, 2025. My work reflects this theme. We are trying to rebuild Negritude and make it global,” Nyakauru said.

In an interview with France 24, he emphasized how his use of everyday objects bridges a connection with audiences, especially younger generations. Nyakauru highlighted the growing interest in African art across Asia, praising collectors and institutions for integrating African artists and their diaspora into global art discussions.

Nyakauru received his formal art education at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Visual Art Studios from 2004 to 2007, where he honed the skills that inform his innovative mixed-media practice today. His participation at AKAA reinforces the international reach of contemporary African art and its evolving dialogue with global audiences.

This exhibition positions Nyakauru as a key voice in contemporary African art, combining historical movements with contemporary materials and perspectives to engage audiences worldwide.
