Controversial Cleric Passion Java Claims Responsibility for Winky D’s Crossover Gig Cancellation

In a stunning revelation, Prophet Passion Java, a controversial cleric and social media personality, has claimed responsibility for the cancellation of Winky D’s highly anticipated annual Crossover gig at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC). Java asserts that he played a pivotal role in the decision to prevent the popular musician from hosting his event, citing his desire to teach Zimbabwean youths respect for their elders.

The Crossover gig, a tradition for Winky D fans that usually takes place on December 31 each year, was expected to be one of the biggest events of the year. However, despite Winky D’s management securing the venue back in May 2024 and making all the necessary arrangements, the prestigious HICC was suddenly booked by businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei. Tagwirei reportedly paid a staggering $245,000 to secure the venue for a Seventh Day Adventist Church event, causing Winky D’s event to be cancelled.

Java, known for his outspoken and often controversial statements, made the claims during an interview with DJ Sparxx and Zigo, in which he accused Winky D of disrespecting President Emmerson Mnangagwa at a previous New Year’s Eve concert. Java took issue with Winky D’s speech, which he interpreted as an attack on the president, accusing the musician of making inappropriate comments like “wakabvuta chigaro” (“you stole the chair”).

In his interview, Java expressed his concerns about Winky D’s influence, especially among young Zimbabweans, arguing that the musician was setting a bad example by disrespecting authority figures. He emphasized that the decision to cancel the gig was motivated by a desire to instill respect for elders and to prevent such disrespect from permeating society.

“Winky D anofarisa and problem yekuti ane influence,” Java explained, adding that his actions were part of a broader cultural and moral lesson. “You can’t diss even if it’s politics. Respect is important.”

The cleric went on to highlight the importance of maintaining respect for elders, regardless of one’s social status or influence. He remarked that even in personal interactions, such as at home, Zimbabweans should avoid addressing their elders disrespectfully.

Winky D’s legal team has since condemned the cancellation, stating that the artist was blindsided by the change in venue arrangements, despite the early booking in May. In a statement, Winky D’s representatives expressed their frustration with the situation, emphasizing the musician’s commitment to delivering an exceptional performance for his fans at HICC.

“Our client has issued the following statement regarding the Winky D Crossover Show of 31 December, 2024. Winky D remains enthusiastic about delivering an exceptional crossover performance at HICC on December 31, 2024, a venue his fans are very familiar with,” the statement read. “However, the venue owners have chosen to prioritize another event on the same date, which unfortunately disregards the agreement established with Winky D.”

Despite the legal and contractual disagreements, the fallout from the cancellation raises broader questions about the intersection of politics, culture, and celebrity in Zimbabwe. Passion Java’s actions appear to be a clear example of how figures of influence, particularly those with political ties, can shape the entertainment landscape in the country.

As Zimbabweans reflect on this controversy, many are left wondering whether this is a one-off incident or part of a larger trend of political and cultural control over the entertainment industry. Winky D’s fans, who were eagerly anticipating the Crossover gig, are now left disappointed, while the broader debate on respect for authority and artistic freedom rages on.
