Ma9Nine Calls on Youth to Honour Liberation Heroes Ahead of Independence Celebrations in Maphisa

ZIMDANCEHALL artiste Ma9Nine has called on young people to reflect deeply on Zimbabwe’s independence and show gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives during the liberation struggle. He made the remarks ahead of the country’s main Independence Day celebrations scheduled for Maphisa in Matobo District, Matabeleland South. His message focused on remembrance, responsibility and unity among the youth. He stressed that freedom came at a high cost and should not be taken for granted. His comments come at a time when national celebrations are blending cultural pride with historical reflection.

Ma9Nine highlighted the experiences of liberation fighters who left their homes, dreams and families to join the struggle for independence. He reminded young people that many of those fighters never returned, having lost their lives on the front lines. He described independence as a result of sacrifice that should inspire gratitude and national pride. He also encouraged the youth to take an active role in building the country’s future through hard work and unity. His message positioned remembrance as a foundation for national development.

The artiste shared these reflections ahead of the Independence Gala set to take place at Minda High School grounds after the main national event. The celebrations will be held under the national theme “Zim@46 – Unity and Development Towards Vision 2030”. The theme emphasizes collective effort in driving economic growth and strengthening national identity. Ongoing development projects such as the Bulawayo–Maphisa road rehabilitation and the construction of a new stadium in Matabeleland South have been linked to this year’s commemorations. These projects are intended to support both infrastructure development and community participation in national events.

At the centre of Ma9Nine’s message is his belief that independence celebrations should combine entertainment with reflection. He stated that music has a role in preserving history while also uplifting communities. As a member of the Musicians for ED movement, he sees his performances as part of a wider cultural and national conversation. He emphasized that his stage presence is not only about entertainment but also about sharing messages of unity and identity. His approach reflects a growing trend among local artists who link music with social awareness.

Ma9Nine also revealed his plans for a special performance that blends ZimDancehall with Tshibilika influences. This fusion reflects his roots in Tsholotsho and his connection to Matabeleland audiences. He has been working with Sipho Mercent Nyathi on new Tshibilika-inspired songs that will form part of an upcoming album. He plans to preview some of these tracks during the Independence Gala. His aim is to deliver a performance that connects deeply with local cultural identity while maintaining his ZimDancehall foundation.

The artiste made history as the first performer to present ZimDancehall music in the Ndebele language. This milestone helped broaden the reach of the genre across different linguistic and cultural groups in Zimbabwe. His upcoming performance is expected to continue that legacy by integrating multiple sound styles for a diverse audience. He expressed confidence that his home province audience will connect strongly with his set. He described the upcoming gala as one of the most important performances of his career.

The Independence Gala will feature a wide range of Zimbabwean artistes representing different genres and cultural backgrounds. The lineup includes performers such as Sulumani Chimbetu, Jeys Marabini, Clement Magwaza, Andy Muridzo and Jah Master. Other groups such as Black Umfolosi, Iyasa and the Mbare Chimurenga Choir will also take part. The event is expected to run into the night with performances celebrating both independence and cultural identity. Organisers have designed the programme to reflect Zimbabwe’s diversity through music, dance and traditional performance.

Hosting duties will be handled by a team of well-known presenters including Thulani Munyandi, Leonard Ncube, Nqobile Malinga and Phil Moyo. Their role will be to guide the flow of performances and engage the audience throughout the night. The gala is expected to attract large crowds from Matabeleland and surrounding regions. Organisers have emphasized safety, order and smooth coordination for the event. The combination of music and national celebration is expected to create a vibrant atmosphere.

Ma9Nine’s message and performance plans highlight the role of artists in shaping national memory and cultural identity. His call for gratitude and unity reflects broader themes tied to Zimbabwe’s Independence Day commemorations. As the country marks 46 years of independence, the focus remains on linking historical sacrifice with present-day development goals. His upcoming performance adds a cultural voice to these national reflections. The Independence Gala in Maphisa stands as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the responsibility to build on the legacy of those who fought for it.
