Sean Jena Set to Release Debut Film ‘I Hope’ in December
Sean Jena, a 25-year-old self-taught scriptwriter and film director from Glen View, Zimbabwe, is gearing up for the release of his debut film, I Hope, set for the end of December 2024. The film delves into pressing social issues such as crime, gangsterism, betrayal, corruption, drug and substance abuse, and the impact of early childhood parenting.
Inspired by his own lived experiences, Jena sought to tell a story that mirrors the harsh realities faced by young people in the ghetto. “I wanted to tell a story that reflects the harsh realities of life in the ghetto. I believe that there is a lot of talent in these communities that is yet to be recognized,” Jena shared in an interview with NewsDay Life & Style.
The film stars a cast of emerging young actors, primarily from the Glen View community, including Samantha Chere as Jacqueline “JQ” Mugabe, Prince Manatse (King Pee), Decibel Kamupira (Tino), and Carlton Rwarasika (Detective Felix). I Hope follows the journey of JQ, a talented young singer who gets entangled in the dangerous world of drug dealing and corruption, ultimately navigating the complexities of the environment she finds herself in.
I Hope is produced by Ignite Youth, a local organization dedicated to empowering young people to pursue their passions and goals. Jena hopes the film will not only entertain but also serve as a tool for raising awareness about the social challenges faced by youth. “I believe that art has the power to transform lives and communities. I hope that my film will inspire young people to make positive choices and pursue their dreams,” Jena stated.
The film’s trailer is expected to drop in early December, with the full movie set for release later in the month. Jena is currently seeking partnerships and sponsorships to support the film’s success and help elevate young Zimbabwean talent.
With I Hope, Jena is setting out to showcase the untapped creative potential in Zimbabwe’s youth and to prove that even self-taught filmmakers can make a significant impact in the local and international film industries.
