Brad Evans’ Five-Wicket Haul Sets Up Dominant Day for Zimbabwe Against Afghanistan

Zimbabwe dominated the opening day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan at Harare Sports Club on Monday, thanks to a sensational bowling display from Brad Evans and a composed batting response from the hosts.

Brad Evans, the 28-year-old Zimbabwean bowling all-rounder, claimed his maiden five-wicket haul, finishing with career-best figures of 5 for 22. His performance dismantled Afghanistan’s batting lineup, restricting them to 127 all out and giving Zimbabwe an early advantage.

After winning the toss on a pitch offering early seam movement, captain Craig Ervine chose to bowl. His decision paid off as Zimbabwe’s pace attack, including Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Tanaka Chivanga, and Evans, exploited the conditions perfectly. Muzarabani and Ngarava generated bounce and movement, while Evans combined accuracy and discipline to break the opposition.

Afghanistan began strongly, with Ibrahim Zadran striking four boundaries. Muzarabani soon adjusted his length and induced an edge that was caught at slip by Welch. Zadran’s dismissal at 23 for one triggered a rhythm for Zimbabwe’s bowlers.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Abdul Malik staged a brief counterattack, taking the score to 50 in 11 overs. Chivanga ended Gurbaz’s innings at 37, and Malik was run out soon after for 30, leaving Afghanistan at 88 for three. Evans then entered the attack and removed Hashmatullah Shahidi for seven, followed by Afsar Zazai caught behind, reducing Afghanistan to 106 for five by lunch.

The afternoon session saw a collapse. Muzarabani removed Bahir Shah with a diving catch by Brian Bennett. Ismat Ali and Sharafuddin Ashraf fell cheaply, and Evans completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Khalil Gurbaz and Ziaur Rahman with consecutive deliveries. Afghanistan’s innings ended at 127 in 33 overs, with Muzarabani taking 3 for 47 and Chivanga also contributing.

Zimbabwe’s reply started nervously as Brian Bennett was bowled for six. Ben Curran and Joylord Gumbie stabilized the innings, displaying patience against Afghanistan’s bowlers. By tea, Zimbabwe were 40 for one.

After the interval, Curran and Welch added 97 for the second wicket, frustrating the visitors. Welch fell for 49 off 89 balls after an inswinger from Rahman, while Curran remained unbeaten on 52. Taylor was 18 not out at stumps, leaving Zimbabwe at 130 for two, three runs ahead of Afghanistan, in full control heading into day two.

Zimbabwe’s combination of disciplined bowling and measured batting has positioned them strongly for the remainder of the Test.
