Chibuku Super Cup launch excites Jere
Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Farai Jere says exciting times lie ahead in the Zimbabwean football landscape following the launch of the 2022 Chibuku Super Cup competition in Harare on Tuesday.
Speaking at the launch ceremony at Mandel Training Centre, Jere said the tournament will go a long way in bringing competition amongst teams in the topflight league.
“We are super excited about the launch of the tournament, it brings us joy. We are therefore grateful to Chibuku Super for such a kind gesture of coming back with this tournament,” he said.
When the competition was launched last year, the sponsors committed to a three-year partnership with the PSL with an option to review.
However, the coming in of COVID-19 brought doubts whether the agreement would still stand but true to their word Chibuku Super has reaffirmed its marriage with the custodians of the country’s flagship football competition, PSL.
Meanwhile, the launch saw all the 18 topflight teams being paired with the bottom four set to clash in a Preliminary Round on 6 August.
FC Platinum are the reigning Chibuku Super Cup champions after beating Ngezi Platinum Stars 5-4 on penalties at Mandava last year.
