Egypt Edges Zimbabwe in Stoppage-Time Thriller at AFCON

Egypt came from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in their opening Africa Cup of Nations match this evening. Liverpool star Mohamed Salah scored a stoppage-time winner, breaking the hearts of the Warriors and securing three points for the Pharaohs.

Zimbabwe stunned the Egyptian side early in the match. Prince Dube capitalized on a counter-attack in the 20th minute to give the Warriors a surprising lead. The goal marked a rare moment of dominance for Zimbabwe, a team that has qualified for AFCON only six times and has never advanced past the group stage.

Despite trailing, Egypt maintained relentless pressure on Zimbabwe’s goalkeeper Washington Arubi. The Pharaohs’ persistence paid off in the 64th minute when Omar Marmoush scored a well-taken equaliser, restoring parity and shifting momentum in Egypt’s favour.

The match remained tightly contested, with Zimbabwe defending resolutely. However, in stoppage time, Mohamed Salah delivered a decisive strike to complete the comeback, demonstrating why Egypt remains the most successful nation in AFCON history with seven titles.

The result highlights the resilience of both teams. Zimbabwe showed they can challenge stronger opponents, while Egypt relied on their experience and star power to snatch victory at the last moment. The Warriors will now look to regroup ahead of their next group stage match, aiming to turn early promise into points.
