Elijah Tapatapa Revives Rural Sport in Makoni North

In Makoni North’s remote Chikore area, veteran athletics coach Elijah Tapatapa is driving a sports revival that blends competition, health, and community empowerment.
On August 1, the Makoni North Progressive Association hosted a major event that brought together children, youths, and elders for a day of physical activity and learning. Tapatapa, Vice Chairman of the Organising Committee, stepped in as Event Director.
The programme began with a Friday clean-up campaign. The main day featured road races — 10 km for under-20s and open categories, 5 km for seniors, and a walk for the elderly. Netball and football matches followed, with a live band closing the celebrations.
Tapatapa said the event aimed to improve both physical and mental wellbeing. Alongside the sports programme were talks on mental health, drug abuse, and community responsibility.
With 40 years at the University of Zimbabwe, Tapatapa brings deep experience in sport development. He served on the Athletics Board, coached throws at national level, and coordinated training in Mashonaland East. He also held the post of Secretary General of the Harare Athletics Board, where he helped draft its constitution and develop athletics across seven districts.
After retiring in 2023, he returned to Makoni with a clear goal: to use his knowledge to build local talent and keep communities active. The choice of Chikore, on the edge of Makoni North, was intentional. Its remote location, bordered by rivers and neighbouring districts, is far from the reach of most talent scouts.
Tapatapa wants to reverse rural-to-urban migration by creating opportunities locally. He believes sports, coaching, and entrepreneurship can help young people stay and thrive.
The August 1 event drew artists Solo Moyo and Ranga Sagombeto. Tapatapa continues to coach athletics at Chikore Secondary School and trains teachers to become effective coaches. He funds events with support from his children and their friends.
He plans to bring in legendary athletes and footballers for mentorship and talent identification, ensuring the next generation has both inspiration and practical support.
