Joy as football returns to Harare

Football enthusiasts in Harare have been plunged into joy following the confirmation of the return of the country’s most followed sport in the capital city starting this coming weekend.

The custodians of the country’s top tier football league, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Wednesday confirmed that the biggest arena on the land, the National Sports Stadium is now fit to host domestic topflight games with the Harare derby pencilled for Sunday set to be the first encounter to take centre stage at the facility after its renovations.

With most Harare teams having shifted base with some moving to either Bulawayo, Mhondoro Ngezi or Gweru, the re-homologation of the National Stadium by the First Instance Body has been a welcome development.

In releasing the weekend fixtures, the PSL on Tuesday confirmed that the high profile Harare derby pitting Dynamos and a struggling Caps United outfit on Sunday will be played at the aforementioned venue, the National Sports Stadium.

Since June, DeMbare have been using the Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo as their alternative home ground while the Green Machine were camped at the Baobab or sometimes Bata Stadium in Gweru.

Faced with some travelling challenges which can be attributed to the teams’ failure to produce the desired dent on the pitch, especially on the part of Makepekepe, the availability of the National Sports Stadium is thus expected to bring better fortunes going forward.
