Matabeleland South Boosts Sports Tourism with Gwanda Mayor’s Annual Boxing Tournament

Matabeleland South’s sports tourism ambitions received a significant lift over the weekend as Pelandaba Stadium hosted the Gwanda Mayor’s Annual Boxing Tournament. Officials say the event is positioning the province as a rising sport-driven destination.
Held under the theme “Knock Out Drugs, Knock Out Litter,” the tournament attracted visitors from across the region and highlighted the province’s growing capacity to host competitive sporting events that drive tourism and support related services.
The Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry noted the strategic role of sport in promoting destinations. In a statement, the Ministry said the tournament “positioned the province as a growing sports-driven destination,” emphasizing how events like this increase visibility and attract visitors.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Tongai Mnangagwa officiated at the tournament, reaffirming government support for the expanding sports tourism sector in Matabeleland South.
Local leadership has been central to the province’s momentum. Mayor Thulani Moyo has actively championed sports tourism, while schools have engaged in the programme, helping Gwanda develop into a vibrant sporting hub.
The Ministry added that the strong community turnout demonstrated a commitment to using sport as a tool for youth development and as an economic driver, contributing to Zimbabwe’s wider tourism value chain.
