Tanaka Chivanga Replaces Injured Gwandu in Zimbabwe Squad for Historic England Test

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has named fast bowler Tanaka Chivanga as a replacement for Trevor Gwandu in the national squad ahead of next week’s highly anticipated Test match against England. Gwandu has been ruled out due to a left groin strain sustained during a training session, forcing the selectors to make a late change to the team.

Chivanga, 31, makes his return to the Test arena after a year-long absence caused by injury. His last appearance came in 2024 against Ireland in Belfast, which was his second Test after debuting against the West Indies in February 2023. Now fully fit, his inclusion brings renewed pace and experience to Zimbabwe’s bowling attack as they prepare for one of the most significant fixtures in the nation’s cricketing history.

The historic one-off Test match is set for May 22–25, 2025, at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. It will mark Zimbabwe’s first Test on English soil since 2003, rekindling a long-dormant rivalry and giving the Chevrons a chance to prove themselves on the global stage.

Chivanga’s comeback is seen as a timely boost for Zimbabwe, especially in the wake of Gwandu’s unfortunate injury. With conditions in England often favouring seam bowling, Chivanga’s pace and ability to generate movement could play a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s performance.

This upcoming match carries extra weight not just for its rarity but also for its historical context. Zimbabwe and England have not met in a Test for over two decades, making the encounter a milestone for Zimbabwean cricket and a chance for the team to showcase its growth and resilience on the world stage.

Zimbabwe head coach Dave Houghton and his technical team will be looking to make the most of this opportunity. With a blend of emerging talent and experienced players like Chivanga, the squad is eager to make a competitive impression.

As the countdown begins, all eyes will be on Trent Bridge next week. For Zimbabwe, this is more than just a match—it’s a statement of their return to the elite level of Test cricket, and Tanaka Chivanga’s inclusion symbolizes both revival and readiness for the challenge ahead.
