Zimbabwe Aims for Glory as U19 Cricket World Cup Kicks Off

Zimbabwe Under-19 Cricket captain Simbarashe Mudzengerere has pledged that his team will fight to win the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup and bring the trophy home for Zimbabwe and co-host Namibia. The declaration came after Mudzengerere met Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga yesterday, shortly after officially receiving the tournament trophy.

The World Cup runs from January 15 to February 6, with Zimbabwe hosting 25 matches, including the semifinals and final, while Namibia stages the remaining 16 fixtures. Acting President Chiwenga expressed hope that the tournament would ignite sporting excellence and inspire Zimbabwean youths to pursue international success. He encouraged the team to give their all and claim the trophy for the nation.

Responding with determination, Mudzengerere said: “I have just met the Acting President of Zimbabwe, and it was such a good moment. He gave words of encouragement, and I think we will be able to lift the trophy for Zimbabwe. I promise we will give something that has never been done by the Zimbabwe U19 before. We are going to lift the trophy.”

International teams have also expressed confidence ahead of the tournament. New Zealand captain Tom Jones highlighted his squad’s experience, noting that three of his players are returning from the previous World Cup. “We arrived about five days ago and we have settled in Harare. It’s a beautiful country. We are really excited and hopefully it will be a good World Cup for us,” said Jones.

England captain Farhan Ahmed praised Zimbabwe’s pitches and conditions, noting that the grounds have left his team eager for competition. He also spoke about meeting Acting President Chiwenga, describing the encounter as a special honour for his squad. “We have met the President of Zimbabwe which is a great honour for us. So far, we have enjoyed the hospitality which is very good and welcoming for everyone, and the pitches have been good, providing a good change of conditions,” Ahmed said.

With global sporting attention on Zimbabwe, the U19 Cricket World Cup promises high-level competition, showcasing emerging talent from around the world while offering Zimbabwean cricket an opportunity to shine on home soil. Mudzengerere’s confidence, combined with strong local support, sets the stage for an unforgettable tournament.
