Zimbabwe and China Mark 45 Years of Friendship with Table Tennis Diplomatic Tournament

Zimbabwe and China celebrated 45 years of diplomatic relations on Sunday with the Table Tennis Diplomatic Friendship Tournament at the Golden Peacock Hotel in Harare. The event, now in its fifth year, reaffirmed the strong partnership and cultural exchange between the two nations.
The tournament brought together players from both countries in a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. In keeping with its theme of unity, the competition used a blended team format, pairing players from Zimbabwe and China to compete against other mixed teams.
In the team events, China captain Wang Liping’s side claimed victory over the team led by Zimbabwe’s Vikram Singh. In the ladies’ team category, Su Zhang’s blended team defeated Ashley Dhlamini’s team. The singles matches were evenly split, with Su Zhang defeating Dhlamini 4-1 in the women’s singles, while Singh secured a 4-1 win over Wang in the men’s singles.
Organised by the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) and the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, the event served as a platform for cultural exchange and sports diplomacy. ZTTU president Noah Ferenando described the tournament as a symbol of the enduring partnership between the two countries, noting its role in boosting the sport’s development in Zimbabwe.
The partnership has led to tangible benefits, including sponsorship for Zimbabwean players, coaches, and administrators to attend training camps in China. These initiatives have contributed to improved performances, with Zimbabwean athletes earning podium finishes in recent international competitions.
Ferenando emphasised that such tournaments give local players exposure to international standards, which is essential for nurturing young talent and improving the national team’s competitiveness.
The free-to-attend event attracted a strong public turnout, reflecting community support for both the sport and the diplomatic friendship it represents. The success of the 2025 edition underlines the value of continued collaboration between Zimbabwe and China in sports and beyond.
