Zimbabwean Combat Star Simbarashe “The Hawk” Hokonya Recovering After Serious Leg Injury

Zimbabwean combat sports standout Simbarashe “The Hawk” Hokonya is recovering from a serious leg injury sustained in a road accident in Midrand, South Africa, on December 18. Hokonya, who has competed at high levels in both professional boxing and the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC), was riding a motorcycle home from a training session when the accident occurred.
“I was forced to avoid the car in front of me and in so doing, lost control, hit the pavement and rammed onto a tree. I had a serious splint on my leg for which I’m undergoing medical treatment,” Hokonya explained. The injury has temporarily halted his training and competitive activity, forcing him to focus on rehabilitation while facing rising medical and physiotherapy costs that have limited his ability to work.
Friends have launched a BackABuddy fundraising page to assist with his recovery. Hokonya expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting that even small contributions or sharing the appeal would be appreciated. “While I’m grateful to be healing, this time has come with unexpected costs, especially for physiotherapy and recovery support, and I’m unable to work as I normally would. Any contribution, no matter how small, would truly help, and even sharing this post or keeping me in your prayers means a lot,” he posted on social media.
Hokonya has long been regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s most versatile fighters. He made his professional boxing debut against Alfred Kashiri at Magamba Hall a decade ago. The 27-year-old southpaw has compiled a domestic record of five wins and six draws, earning respect for his technical skill, durability, and consistency.
In mixed martial arts, Hokonya has represented Zimbabwe on Africa’s premier MMA stage through the EFC. His most recent assignment was headlining the 2025 PFL Africa Semi-final at Kigali’s BK Arena in Rwanda, where he faced South African Nkosi Ndebele. The bantamweight contest was described by the media as “a razor-close bout worthy of a PFL Africa main event,” although Hokonya lost on points.
As Hokonya focuses on recovery, his supporters continue to rally behind him, providing financial and moral support. His commitment to returning to competition remains strong, with the goal of resuming both boxing and MMA at the highest level once fully healed.
Simbarashe Hokonya’s journey highlights both the physical risks athletes face and the resilience required to overcome setbacks. Fans and the Zimbabwean combat sports community remain hopeful for his full recovery and eventual return to the ring and octagon.
