Zimbabwe’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Cote D’Ivoire qualifiers has sparked uproar among Zimbabwean football fans who were eager to see their team in action and vying for a place at the continental competition.
Zimbabwe’s elimination from the tournament together with Kenya follows the country’s failure to reinstall the Felton Kamambo led board which was suspended by the Sports and Recreation Commission over allegations of misgovernance.
After waking up to the news of Zimbabwe’s elimination from the competition a myriad of fans have voiced their concern over how the matter was handled by the SRC and relevant authorities.
An interim board led by Blessing Mugara was installed to head the affairs of Zimbabwean football on an interim basis but the new leadership is not being recognised by FIFA who have over the past few months insisted that the Felton Kamambo led board needed to be first reinstated in order for Zimbabwe to be readmitted among FIFA members.
Zimbabwean talent dotted across the globe will now have to wait for events in their native land to normalise before being able to represent their country in competitive international competitions.
Zimbabwe have been part of the last 3 Africa Cup of Nations in 2017, 2019 and 2021 but the qualification run has now come to an end by default after the Warriors exclusion from the qualifiers where the Warriors had been drawn to face South Africa, Liberia and Morocco.
