Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport Commends Warriors After AFCON Defeat to Egypt

Despite a narrow defeat to Egypt in their opening Africa Cup of Nations match, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Retired Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe, has publicly praised the national team for their “courage and determination” on the continental stage.

The Warriors faced a formidable Egyptian side in a high-stakes AFCON encounter. Zimbabwe took an early lead through Prince Dube, but Egypt fought back with goals from Omar Marmoush and a stoppage-time strike by Mohamed Salah to secure a 2-1 victory. While the scoreboard did not favor Zimbabwe, the team’s performance earned admiration from fans and government officials alike.

Minister Sanyatwe took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account shortly after the match to offer a message of support to the squad. “To our Warriors, I salute your fighting spirit in the match against Egypt,” he wrote. “Though the result was not in our favor, you showed courage, determination, and pride in representing Zimbabwe on the AFCON stage.”

His remarks come at a time when the Warriors face significant pressure in a challenging group. By publicly backing the team, Sanyatwe aimed to boost morale and shift attention from the loss to the resilience demonstrated by the players.

Looking ahead, the Minister framed the defeat as a building block for the team’s growth. He encouraged the players to maintain confidence and view each match as an opportunity to improve. “This is only the beginning; every setback is a lesson, and every match is an opportunity to rise stronger,” Sanyatwe added. “The nation stands firmly behind you. Keep your heads high, keep believing, and keep fighting for the dream.”

Zimbabwe now turns its focus to upcoming group stage matches, with government and fan support reinforcing the Warriors’ determination to make an impact at the tournament.
