ZSAPD Celebrates World Assistive Technology Day, Champions Inclusion Through Sport

The Zimbabwe Sports Association for People with Disabilities (ZSAPD) has joined the global community in commemorating World Assistive Technology Day, observed annually on June 4. The occasion serves to spotlight the crucial role assistive technology plays in empowering people with disabilities, fostering inclusion, and unlocking individual potential across all spheres of life.

In a statement marking the day, ZSAPD emphasised the intersection between assistive technology and sport, noting that access to the right tools and equipment can transform the lives of athletes living with disabilities. By breaking down physical and societal barriers, assistive technology enables individuals to engage in physical activity, develop confidence, and pursue excellence.

“Through our programmes, we provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in sport, build confidence and develop a sense of purpose,” the organisation said. “We recognise the transformative power of sport, and assistive technology plays a vital role in making this power accessible to everyone.”

ZSAPD has long advocated for greater accessibility in Zimbabwe’s sporting landscape. With support from local and international partners, the organisation facilitates adaptive sports programmes and provides the necessary tools—such as wheelchairs, prosthetics, and hearing aids—that help level the playing field for athletes with varying needs.

On this year’s World Assistive Technology Day, ZSAPD reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a more inclusive society through both sport and innovation. The association is calling on government agencies, non-profits, businesses, and individuals to join the effort in ensuring that persons with disabilities have equal access to technology, opportunities, and support.

“Inclusivity is not a privilege; it is a right,” the statement concluded. “We must work together to create a society where every individual, regardless of ability, can thrive.”

World Assistive Technology Day serves as a global reminder that progress toward equality and empowerment hinges on inclusive design, accessible infrastructure, and a collective commitment to supporting all members of society.
