Armed robbers pounce on bread van.
Armed robbers embarked on a bread heist on Tuesday and left with around 500 loaves of bread in Harare. The incident occurred in Glen Norah at Specimen shopping center.
The robbers followed a Lobels bread van and pounced on the unsuspecting delivery men. They were armed with pistols. Although the bread delivery men put up a spirited fight to wad off the attackers, they were overpowered. All the bread in the van which amounted to 500 loaves was stolen. The bread is valued at 3000 rtgs dollars.
According to police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi investigations are still underway with regards to the matter. Bread has now become a thing of the past in most households. The high prices with which it is being charged and it’s scarcity have made it a special commodity. Most people are surviving on samp, rice and sadza which is also selling at high prices.
Bread prices started increasing early this year from around 1 rtgs to more than 4 rtgs now. Some shops are even selling it for 6 rtgs dollars. The situation has become so dire and school children and parents have become affected.
Bread is a basic food item that is enjoyed by many during tea time. In Sudan, the dictator Omar Al Bashir was toppled from power after an increase in bread price. It is clearly an important commodity for many.
