Dominic Benhura Expands Shona Sculpture Market to China

Renowned Zimbabwean sculptor Dominic Benhura is turning his artistic focus eastward, with China emerging as his latest and most promising market. The award-winning stone artist, celebrated globally for his mastery of Shona sculpture, is now carving a new frontier in Asia, reflecting Zimbabwe’s growing cultural ties with the region.

For decades, Benhura’s work has travelled the world, featuring in major galleries and private collections across Europe and the United States. Nearly 50 years after his international debut, the veteran sculptor is charting a fresh path, blending traditional Zimbabwean artistry with new global opportunities.

The impact of this expansion is already visible. Benhura is featured in the documentary Zimbabwe-China Relations @45, produced by local think tank Ruzivo Media & Resource Centre. In the film, he shares how his entry into the Chinese market began with a historic milestone.

“As you know, the President of China, His Excellency Xi Jinping, has two of my pieces,” Benhura reveals.

These presidential gifts opened doors to a wave of new commissions, networks, and increased visibility. “After the President’s gifts, I also did some pieces that were presented to some Chinese officials. I had a lot of coverage from Chinese journalists stationed in different parts of Africa. They all came here. I was on many platforms, newspapers, and interviews. So as a result, I now have a lot of friends and clients from China,” he added.

Benhura’s move signals a strategic expansion of Shona sculpture into Asian markets, where collectors and art enthusiasts are showing growing interest in Zimbabwean stone art. His work, known for expressive forms and emotional depth, is poised to attract a broader audience, bridging cultural appreciation between Zimbabwe and China.

With decades of experience and global recognition, Dominic Benhura continues to solidify his legacy as a pioneer of Shona sculpture, now extending his influence to one of the world’s most dynamic art markets.
