Hildah Makes Debut as Designer at Zimbabwe Fashion Week with Hilz Couture

“It still feels surreal,” says Hildah, moments before her debut collection hits the runway. “To go from being the girl on the catwalk to the woman behind the designs — it’s a dream I’ve carried for years.”
Zimbabwe Fashion Week kicked off yesterday at the Hyatt Regency, Harare, and will run until Saturday. More than 10 designers and a series of fashion talks are featured, but for Hildah, the event marks a personal milestone.
A former top model and international pageant queen, Hildah is now presenting her first collection under her own brand, Hilz Couture. “I have been part of this show for so many years as a model,” she explains. “But this is the first time I’m here as a designer. It’s emotional. It’s empowering. And it’s something I’ll never forget.”
Her journey mirrors that of international icons like Victoria Beckham, who transitioned from pop star and model to high-fashion designer. Hildah’s career spans major pageants and fashion events, including Miss Supranational in Poland, Miss Intercontinental in Sri Lanka, Top Model of the World in Egypt, Miss Tourism International in Shanghai, and Africa Fashion Week at the African Union in Addis Ababa. She credits these experiences with shaping her design perspective.
The debut Hilz Couture collection includes 10 statement pieces — eight for women and two for men — designed for global travellers who value the journey as much as the destination. “I wanted to create pieces that are wearable, stylish and functional,” Hildah says. “From bold floral prints to breathable linens in fresh summer colours, each item tells a story. Whether you’re a fashionista or prefer effortless chic, there’s something in this line for you.”
All fabrics are sourced locally, supporting Zimbabwean fabric stores and artisans. “Our country is full of talent and resources. We just need to shine a light on it,” she adds.
Zimbabwe Fashion Week, established in 2009, has become the nation’s leading platform for designers, models, stylists, and media. Hildah highlights the importance of visibility for local creatives. “There’s so much talent here. My hope is that platforms like this attract international scouts and buyers who can give our creatives the global exposure they deserve.”
Hilz Couture is a reflection of Hildah’s identity, combining her first name with a commitment to high-fashion craftsmanship. Alongside her design work, Hildah balances family life as a mother. “I juggle school runs, work and everything else with prayer, planning and passion. It’s not easy, but when you love what you do, you make it work,” she says.
She draws inspiration from figures like Oprah Winfrey, who overcame early rejection to build a global empire. “Oprah taught me that destiny delayed is not destiny denied,” Hildah reflects.
Having worked with fashion powerhouses like David Tlale in South Africa and designers David Alford and John Ablaza from the Philippines, Hildah has built a strong foundation for her own brand. As her models prepare backstage, dressed in bold colours and fluid designs, Hildah remains focused. “This is just the beginning,” she says. “I’m not just showcasing clothes. I’m telling my story — one piece at a time.”
Hilz Couture’s debut at Zimbabwe Fashion Week positions Hildah as a rising force in African fashion, blending heritage, global influences, and personal narrative into every design.
