Mbira player and afro fusion musician Hope Masike recently took to Instagram to divulge her love relationship with her motherland. She said that although life has become tough in the country and everything is not working, she still loves to be in her country. She wrote,”I travel a lot and I see how great things could be. I come back home to dozens of people asking me why I came back”.
Masike said that as a well travelled person, she has seen it all. She has been to places that are well developed and thriving and et she still yearns to return to her country of birth. She confessed that as soon as she sets foot into Zimbabwe she immediately gets frustrated over things like where to get fuel but it still feels good to be home.
She sad the country is struggling but on the hand is in a better place than other African countries whose citizens are flocking overseas as refugees. She said that living in other country unsettles her and she would rather be in Zim. Masike wrote,”Yet there is a level of unrest, poverty or distress that makes a place called home exactly where you have the unofficial second class citizenship status still!”. Masike’s sentiments are shared by most people who might have gone to seek greener pastures in other countries but still feel like home is the best place to be in spite of unending hardships.
Zimbabwe is currently in shambles with inflation rising to 300% in August. Prices of goods are ridiculously high and the general cost of living is beyond the reach of many.
Issues such as the ban on the use of the US dollar, cash shortages, a non existent industry and a fruitless agricultural season have all contributed to the economic distress.
Masike rounded off her message bystating that home is where the heart is and enquired from her fans where their hearts belong. Masike is an award winning singer and one of the very few female artists that are able to play the mbira instrument. She has toured several countries and was recently in Norway to record new songs with her Monoswezi counterparts
