Most popular street lingo of 2018

Zimbabweans have been known to come up with the most hilarious slang. Issues of economic hardships and unemployment have ironically led to people coming up with unusual and yet humourous phrases that depict the social and economic meltdown.

1. Stonyeni
   The word was introduced by musician Jah signal in his song sweetie, shinga muroora. In spite of his averments that the word represents unconditional love, the word has been used many a time as a reference to sexual intercourse.
2. Kudira jecha
   The phrase which directly translates to “pouring sand” was popular in 2018. It was used in circumstances where something that had been planned fails at the last minute. For example an event that fails to kick off or a journey that gets cancelled would be said to have been poured sand over(zvadirwa jecha). Zimdancehall artist Winky D even released a song with the same message of kudirwa jecha.
3. The fulcrum,the pith
   Following the July elections, Advocate Thabani Mpofu rose to fame with his usage of the words fulcrum and pith in his oral submissions to court in the case where they were challenging the results of the election. The words were used so often by ordinary people to the point that you could hear a preschool kid saying the fulcrum or the pith of the matter.
4. V11
   It was also a popular saying in 2018 after the elections. It was used in instances where one was required to prove something. You would be simply told to show the V11. In other words it was a direct translation of the word evidence.
