Mother’s day reflections
Mother’s day is just around the corner and the hidden deep meaning behind the day ought to be explored. Whilst some may simply take it as an ordinary day in which mothers get a bit of recognition for their role in society, a lot can be unearthed about the importance of such a day.
Mothers are generally known for their caring and loving nature. In the African homestead, a woman is seen as the pillar of society. The popular term ‘mudzimai’ literally means root-mother meaning that a woman is viewed as the root in any homestead, she is the one that holds everything together just like how the roots of a tree hold the tree to the ground.
A mother’s love and sacrifice can never be underestimated. The basic starting point would be the fact that women endure a lot of pain in child bearing. They later on have to bear the brunt of physically raising their little ones.
Mothers often have to sacrifice their careers and aspirations in order to take care of the children at home. Several stories have been told of women who have had to resign from their work or fail to follow up on job offers elsewhere because they have to be close to their kids.
Mother’s day is indeed a special day to appreciate the importance of mothers in society.
