Tendai Maduwa Releases Debut Children’s Book, ‘Makwizha and the Black Mouse’

Zimbabwean actor and author Tendai Maduwa, based in Los Angeles, has recently released his debut children’s book titled Makwizha and the Black Mouse. The book, which explores themes of loyalty in family, work, and school, aims to address the erosion of moral values in today’s society.

Maduwa, who rose to prominence as an actor, shared in a recent interview that his desire to write this book stemmed from a deep concern for the diminishing presence of loyalty and integrity in the younger generation. He reflected, “I realized that loyalty and integrity are becoming rare in this generation. Morals are being overshadowed by the pursuit of attention, and I felt a responsibility to redirect the future generations.”

This personal conviction led Maduwa to embark on his journey as a children’s author. Set in a fantastical world where trees talk and animals live harmoniously with nature, Makwizha and the Black Mouse tells the story of Makwizha, a kind-hearted hunter who saves a black mouse from a death trap. However, the mouse betrays him after being freed, delivering a profound lesson about the consequences of betrayal.

“I hope children learn about loyalty, hard work, and the importance of standing by one’s principles,” Maduwa said, emphasizing the moral lessons embedded in the story. The creation of this book was no easy task for Maduwa. It took him seven years to complete, with every lesson carefully woven into the fabric of the narrative.

The book was published by Roots Press and Studios, a publishing house with roots in both Zimbabwe and the USA, marking a significant milestone in Maduwa’s writing career. The publication is a testament to his dedication and perseverance in pursuing his passion for storytelling.

Maduwa’s inspiration for writing lies deeply in his upbringing, particularly the influence of his late grandmother, Mbuya Nyamutovera, who taught him the values of hard work and integrity. He fondly remembers how her folktales sparked his passion for storytelling, and he hopes his book will inspire young readers to embrace these same values.

In an effort to make sure the book reaches its intended audience in Zimbabwe, Maduwa is actively working to ensure that the book is widely accessible. He has implemented measures to combat piracy and protect the intellectual property of his work. The first batch of 500 copies is set to be released, with 300 already ordered, as Maduwa is determined to ensure that children in Zimbabwe have access to these valuable lessons.

Despite his success, Maduwa admits that life in the US comes with challenges. “I miss the simplicity of village life in Makosa,” he shares. “I long for the countryside and the taste of traditional dishes that remind me of home.” However, his focus remains on his mission to uplift literacy and provide educational resources for the younger generation back home.

“Improving literacy is a collective effort,” Maduwa asserts, emphasizing the need for collaboration across various sectors to address the challenges facing the education system. He believes that through storytelling, he can help instill the necessary values that are crucial for shaping the character of future generations.

In addition to Makwizha and the Black Mouse, Maduwa has written other works, including Marry My Language and Nuggets of Success, further establishing his voice as an author and speaker. He is also currently involved in a television series for the 2024 Emmys titled The Sure Rules, along with two other undisclosed projects.

“I want to keep pushing boundaries,” Maduwa says, “and share our stories with the world.” His work continues to inspire and contribute to the global conversation on the importance of integrity, loyalty, and the power of storytelling in shaping the future.
