Iconic sungura star Alick Macheso sues local music recording company Gramma Records for $15 800.
Gramma Records is Zimbabwe’s longest standing and is facing a lawsuit for royalties covering a five-year period.
In his court papers filed by his lawyers Mutuso, Taruvinga and Mhiribidi Attorneys, Macheso alleges, “From March 2009 to September 2014, defendant issued invoices to plaintiff with a total royalty fee amounting to $15 863, which amount remain outstanding to date. Despite various demands, defendant has failed and/or refused to pay the plaintiff the sum of $15 863.”
During the stated time period, Macheso recorded several albums including ‘Zvakanaka Zvakadaro’.
Gramma’s representing lawyers Kanokanga and Partners will challenge Macheso’s claim at a hearing.
The lawsuit comes after the music label was reported to be up for sale. To date under Gramma, Macheso’s highest ever selling album is ‘Simbaradzo’ which sold over 300 000 copies.
