Fuller details emerge on woman who was axed by husband

The country’s biggest hospital, the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, has issued a statement on the case of a woman who has axed in the head by her husband. The hospital confirmed that it has treated the woman and removed the axe after she was referred there in a perilous condition.

The hospital also called on people to disregard a message posted on social media, by the woman’s relatives appealing for financial assistance for her medical care.Below is the full statement from the hospital.

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals would like to set the record straight with regards to a woman who presented to our hospital with an axe in situ in her head.

The patient came as a referral from Bindura Hospital on 18 July 2020 but could not be immediately taken to theatre as she had lost a lot of blood and needed to have a CT scan done. Our attending specialist neurosurgeons determined that blood transfusion and a CT scan needed to be done first as part of the resuscitation process. Thus, she remained admitted in the Resuscitation Room which is a High Dependency Unit where doctors and nurses provided appropriate care. After all the preliminary procedures were done, the patient was then taken to theatre on 21 July 2020 where she was operated on and the axe was removed successfully. The patient is currently admitted in one of our wards where she is receiving care. The hospital did not demand any payment upfront for all that has been done to the patient since she is considered an emergency.

Given the above, we would like to urge the public to disregard the widely publicised appeal for financial assistance by relatives of that patient. We also urge members of the public who genuinely want to assist the patient to verify information from the hospital before releasing any assistance.
