Fantan stirs controversy

A few assertions by zimdancehall producer and manager Dj Fantan that he was one of the architects of the popular music genre have given rise to a heated social media row.

It all started sometime last week when Guspy warrior openly endorsed Fantan as the zimdancehall godfather. This led to Dj Fantan announcing later on that he was the one who had introduced zimdancehall to the nation and marketed it. He further asserted that he was responsible for grooming most of the artists making waves in the industry.

Although some people were full of nothing but praise for the youthful artist others were left seething in anger. Some people said that Fantan was crediting himself for something he had not had a hand in. They categorically mentioned that it was the likes of Winky D who had pushed the genre into existence on the local scene.

They said Fantan was unknown during the early days of Winky D who introduced such music with songs such as musarove bigman and ndazovaona vane godo. They questioned where Fantan was during those days.

The issue has become a hot topical issue on social media and fans have been split into two camps with each endorsing it’s own artist as the ultimate winner of the challenge. It is however true to note that both winky D and Fantan have been advocating for the recognition of zimdancehall for quite some time.

Winky D has penned down song after song with most of them being local favourites. Fantan on the other hand is renowned for grooming young talent such as Ras pompy, Enzo Ishall, Bounty Lisa, Seh Calaz and Killer T who are all giants in zimdancehall circles. His production house Chillspot records has been on the forefront in terms of producing zimdancehall music.
