Sha Sha’s BET win exposes rot in local promoters
Zimbabwean born artist Sha Sha recently made history by becoming the first ever local artist to win a BET award. She beat stiff competition including artists from the UK, France and other countries to scoop the Viewers Choice Award. Social media has been abuzz with comments of praise and congratulatory messages to the Mutare born singer.
Sha Sha was first identified by UK based singer Audius Mtawarira. She went on to get signed by South African music sensation DJ Maphorisa. She is famous for her chart topping tracks and has since written a new chapter in her history book.
While most people were thrilled that the singer has made a massive breakthrough, others lambasted local promoters for failing to uplift young talent. They said most local singers end up seeking greener pastures in South Africa because of lack of recognition at home it they end up making it big on the global platform. Sha Sha is quite a powerhouse in South Africa.
Other locks artists making it big in South Africa include Nadia Nakai who won the female hip hop artist of the year in 2019 and Buffalo Souljah who has since become a household name in South Africa. Sha Sha joins a list of artists trekking to South Africa for better opportunities.
Fellow artists, fans and companies were full of praise for the humble faced singer who just raised her country’s flag high. She is the only artist to be nominated and to win the award.
