ANSA nominees to be unveiled today
The 2018 annual national sports awards nominees are set to be unveiled today as the country celebrates athletes that excelled in 2018. The unveiling ceremony of top performing athletes will be held at the Sports and Recreation headquaters in the capital.
2018 was a year in which some Zimbabwean athletes and teams performed well. The Zimbabwe sevens rugby team will be a top contender for the team of the year award after winning the Africa cup which was held in Tunisia. The Zimbabwe national soccer team will however be another contender in the team of the year category after the warriors reclaimed the Cosafa Cup title as well as performed well in Afcon qualifiers.
The ANSA awards were initially supposed to be held in December but the event was postponed following difficulties in tying down sponsors. The event postponement was also brought forward owing to African Union Sports council Region 5 games which were held in Botswana in December.
The 2018 ANSA awards ceremony is set to be held on the 1st of March. Past winners of the top ANSA sports person of the year award are Charles Manyuchi, Brendon De Jonge, Helen Costa and Minister of youth, sport, arts and recreation Kirsty Coventry.
Shihan Samson Muripo is the reigning sports person of the year following top performances in 2017. Delta will again be bankrolling the 2018 ANSA awards although the SRC organising committee has called upon other corporates to come on board and assist in funding the awards ceremony which celebrates top Zimbabwean athletes.
