Economic crisis hits hard on boarding schools.
The current economic meltdown being experienced by the country has impacted negatively on boarding schools. A recent picture of students eating plain samp at Gokomere school have set tongues wagging at the sorry state of affairs in schools. Due to the acute shortage of bread in the country, most schools have resorted to serving samp, sweet potatoes and rice as an alternative.
Most students have bemoaned scarcity of food supplies in schools. Students can barely survive on the measly portions being offered. Those who are fortunate enough have to get food supplies from home.
Parents have also been crying foul over the issue coupled with increases in school fees. Boarding fees have astronomically risen from around Z$300 to around Z$ 1500. This amount is beyond the reach of many people who are already struggling to raise money for other important things such as healthcare bills and food.
