Electricity cable thief nearly electrocuted
A man from Harare has come to rue the day he decided to steal some electricity cables after being badly hurt in the process. Walter Mauto sustained serious burns as he was trying to steal earthing on a 33kv line in Darwendale at Caldar farm. The illegal act left him with serious burns all over his body. To add to the injury, he also suffered a broken leg. In spite of the dangers associated with trying to tamper with electricity cables, this problem of thieves fiddling with such has become very common. Courts have been flooded with cases of vandalism of late as people try to make a quick buck. The mandatory sentence of 10 years imprisonment if one is caught has done little to deter people from engaging in the illegal activity. Most people did not show any sympathy for Mauto who was in obvious pain. The burns to his body could have cost him his life. It is quite unfortunate that he will also have to face the wrath of the law on top of his physical pains. Vandalism is a serious offence. The major power utility ZESA has often issued warnings on those that tamper with their infrastructure. The courts have also been stern in passing out the mandatory sentence in the absence of any special circumstances. People have however continued with their habit of stealing electricity cables thereby causing a lot of expenses to the power utility company. Some areas have even been vandalised to the point that they have gone for years without any electricity. Mauto got a harsh slap of reality when he was almost electrocuted while trying to steal cables.
