Zimbabwean couple makes a date with presidential candidate Joe Biden

A Zimbabwean couple recently made the headlines in the United States by making a date with presidential contender Joe Biden. Zwelibanzi Moyo- Williams and her husband Leonardo Williams a owners of a restaurant called Zweli’s kitchen were invited by Biden to join him at the final presidential debate held in Nashville Tennessee recently. There were not enough campaign staffers so each candidate was allowed to bring two guests.

The couple owns the only Zimbabwean restaurant in the USA. They live in Durham and when contacted if they could make it to Nashville they confirmed. They had to drive all night to get to the debate on time.

Speaking on the occasion Moyo-Williams remarked,” It was surreal. We were sitting with his wife, Dr Jill, and his granddaughter, and we had some really nice conversations with them”.

Moyo Williams was born and bred in Zimbabwe. She grew up in Bulawayo. She moved to the United States twenty years ago to pursue studies in Tourism and hospitality. She however longed for the taste of home prompting her to start up a restaurant that serves Zimbabwean cuisine. She said,” I missed home. Growing up back home in Zimbabwe, I used to love to cook a lot. Traditional food. When I came to this country it was so difficult or me to try to explain the flavours to people. Every time I would make food for someone, they were uncomfortable with it. They were uncomfortable seeing me eat sadza with my hands. But when they tried it they really liked it”. The couple opened Zweli’s kitchen in 2018.

The restaurant serves classic dishes such as peri peri chicken and a specially made boerewors. They received great reviews in the local newspaper, the News and Observer.

The couple was involved in humanitarian work and helped victims of a mysterious series of illnesses in Durham. They fed thousands of local people for free
