PSL postpones matchday 2 fixtures

In a twist of fate, the Zimbabwe football landscape has once again been plunged into sheer uncertainty after the Premier Soccer League (PSL), who are the custodians of the country’s flagship competition the topflight league, was forced to postpone all matchday 2 fixtures lined up for this week due to the unavailability of match officials at game venues across the country.

In the midst of the suspension of the ZIFA Board by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) on Tuesday (yesterday), the ZIFA Referees Committee took the matter into their own hands by withdrawing their officials from all the matches which were pencilled for yesterday despite some of them having logged in for team inspections.

The move has thus prompted the PSL to push forward the matchday 2 fixtures until an amicable solution to the problem is reached so as to enable the league to carry on as planned.

“This letter serves to advise that all the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Match-day Two fixtures scheduled for this week have been postponed. This has been necessitated by the non-appearance of match officials at all the match venues today (Tuesday). The PSL is concerned about the lack of communication from the ZIFA Referees Committee as we tried to engage them on the matter but to no avail. We, however, hope that a solution will be reached soon. We will update on any further developments,” read the statement from the PSL posted on their official Twitter page.   

Five matches were supposed to be played yesterday but failed to kick off owing to this predicament while four other matches were supposed to take centre stage between this Wednesday (two) and Thursday (two).

With uncertainty revolving around the games the PSL saw it fit to postpone the matches as the association tries to find a common ground with the ZIFA Referees Committee, but for now there will be no football to talk about in Zimbabwe until the matter has been resolved.
