Dynamos celebrate 60 years

18 January 1963 marked the formation of Dynamos Football Club. Founded in Mbare, Salisbury Rhodesia, the club’s formation came at the height of the Rhodesia front’s racist onslaught which had seen sport being divided along racial lines.

Being an off shoot of two semi-professional clubs namely Salisbury United and Salisbury City who had disbanded in 1962. Inspired by the old Dynamos Moscow Football Club, a conglomeration of minds came together to engineer what would emerge as the biggest football club in Zimbabwe.

Dominating the Rhodesia national league through the 1970’s Dynamos rose to become the team to beat although there was massive rivalry from Highlanders FC, Zimbabwe Saints and later on Caps united.

When Zimbabwe attained independence, Dynamos’ dominance on the domestic football landscape  would continue with the 1990’s bringing rise to a golden generation of stars such as Tauya Murehwa, Vitalis Takawira and Francis Shonhayi just to name a few.

Dembare’s biggest taste of success would however come in 1998 when the Glamour Boys powered into the final of the Caf Champions league before losing in controversial circumstances to Asec Mimosas 4-2.

Since that historical run Dynamos would then make it into the semi-finals of the champions league with the late David Mandigora at the helm as head coach. Another golden era would be witnessed under Callisto Pasuwa as the club won 4 consecutive league titles from 2011-2014 and since the departure of Pasuwa the club has not won a league crown.

As the club celebrates 60 year’s of existence fans will be hoping dembare soon return to the podium, an occurance which a club as big as Dynamos ought to be experiencing more regularly. To date Dynamos boast of 22 league titles and with the coming in of Sakunda Holdings to provide financial stability hopes are high that dembare will once again return to it’s days of glory.

Tasked with the mission of steering Dynamos back to the winners podium is Herbert Maruwa, a man that assisted Callisto Pasuwa in dembare’s last era of success.
