The Zimbabwe Theatre Academy Trust (ZTAT) has kicked off auditions for aspiring students hoping to join its 2025 academic programme. The auditions, being held today at Reps Theatre in Belgravia, Harare, mark the start of another cycle for the academy, which is dedicated to developing professional talent in the creative arts sector.
An affiliate of the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology Development, ZTAT offers a nine-month intensive training programme beginning on February 10. Successful candidates will graduate with certificates on November 27, 2025, equipped with the skills to thrive in the competitive world of theatre and content creation.
Over 30 Students Expected to Join
Veteran actor and Zimbabwe Theatre Academy programmes manager Teddy Mangawa confirmed the auditions, revealing that more than 30 aspiring actors and content creators are expected to participate. Of these, 20 will enroll as full-time students while 15 will join part-time.
“The auditions are going ahead as planned in preparation for the 2025 academic year,” Mangawa said. “This training programme is meant to empower students with the right skills when they venture into theatre.”
Inclusive Opportunities for Aspiring Talent
Mangawa emphasized that the programme is open to individuals with or without five Ordinary Level passes. Those with the qualifications will receive a Hexco certificate, while those without will be awarded the Zimbabwe Theatre Academy certificate.
“This programme caters to those who can act and are confident they can succeed,” Mangawa explained. “It is meant to give everybody a chance to train and enhance their skills in theatre production, acting, and other scripting.”
The academy has no upper age limit, welcoming students aged 18 and above. According to Mangawa, ZTAT aims to provide equal opportunities for aspiring creatives, regardless of their background or previous training.
Nurturing Talent for a Better Future
Since its inception in 2017, the Zimbabwe Theatre Academy has become a nursery for raw talent, producing notable names in the local arts scene, including NAMA nominees Nosizo Gumede, Ronald Sigeca, and Cadrick Msongelwa. The academy, founded by Lloyd Nyikadzino, prides itself on being a stepping stone for actors, directors, and producers to make an impact on both local and international stages.
According to its mission statement, ZTAT is committed to creating a sustainable artistic development ecosystem in Zimbabwe. The academy places a strong focus on using theatre and film as tools for empowerment and social transformation while also providing employment opportunities for youth and women.
Reps Theatre: A Historic Venue
Reps Theatre, the venue for today’s auditions, has long been a hub for nurturing Zimbabwe’s top acting and comedy talents. The theatre’s rich history and reputation for excellence make it the perfect location for the academy to scout new talent.
Mangawa concluded by highlighting the importance of the academy’s work: “The programme capacitates creatives to deliver professional theatre and film products and services, ensuring they are well-prepared for the industry.”
A Bright Future for Theatre in Zimbabwe
With auditions continuing on Thursday for latecomers, ZTAT is ready to welcome its next cohort of students and embark on another year of creativity and learning. As the academy continues to expand its reach, the Zimbabwean theatre industry looks set for even greater achievements, thanks to the dedication and vision of institutions like ZTAT.
