Jere Targets League Title as CAPS United End Nine-Year Drought

CAPS United president Farai Jere has boldly declared his ambition to bring the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title back to the Green Machine in 2025, marking an end to their nine-year wait. With the new season set to kick off in March, Jere is confident that his team is well-equipped to challenge for top honors.

Speaking during a training session on Tuesday, Jere emphasized that the club’s aggressive recruitment drive is a reflection of their ambition.

“If you look at the players we have brought in, our goal is clear—we want to win the league and cups,” Jere said. “CAPS United is a big brand, and we have told our new signings that they must embrace that mindset. This season, we are going for trophies.”

The Green Machine has been highly active in the transfer market, securing high-profile signings to bolster their squad. Among the notable acquisitions is former Celtic midfielder Kundai Benyu, who brings European experience to the team. They have also added Tanaka ‘Kante’ Shandirwa and prolific forward Nyasha Chintuli to strengthen their attacking options.

On Monday, the club continued its spending spree by unveiling Brighton Manhire from FC Platinum and Congolese midfielder Love Raema Bissila Mabiala. Further fortifying their squad, CAPS United signed two new goalkeepers—Harmony Nare from ZPC Hwange and Ghanaian shot-stopper Stephen Odai Kwaku.

Makepekepe, who last lifted the PSL trophy in 2016, endured a disappointing 2024 campaign, finishing ninth on the table. However, with a refreshed squad and a determined leadership, Jere is optimistic about a title push.

Meanwhile, CAPS United legend Alois Bunjira has backed his son, Junior Bunjira, to shine in the upcoming season. The younger Bunjira had an impressive debut campaign in 2024, earning a national team call-up. His father has gone a step further by boldly predicting his son will win the coveted Soccer Star of the Year award.

“JB07 will be the 2025 Zim PSL Soccer Star of the Year. I prophesy,” Bunjira posted on Facebook.

As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on CAPS United to see if their revamped squad can live up to the expectations and reclaim their place at the summit of Zimbabwean football.
