NBSZ Blood Drive Collects 8,700 Units in Early 2025

The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has successfully collected 8,700 units of blood in its latest nationwide donation campaign, conducted between January and February 10, 2025. The initiative, launched in collaboration with Redan Petroleum, aimed to replenish the national blood bank and ensure an adequate supply for medical emergencies.

The blood drive took place in major cities, including Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare, and Masvingo. As an incentive, non-remunerated blood donors were offered a 5-litre fuel coupon, a strategy that significantly boosted participation.

NBSZ Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Lucy Marowa, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. “The target for this year is 97,500 units,” she stated. “So far, we have managed to collect 8,700 units between January and February 10, 2025.” With this strong start, the NBSZ is on track to surpass last year’s total collection of 77,020 units.

The campaign’s success varied across different regions. Masvingo recorded the highest number of donations, collecting 513 units, while Mutare followed closely with 508 units. Harare contributed 368 units, demonstrating a broad geographical participation that improved the diversity of the donor pool. This geographical spread increases the chances of obtaining rare blood types, which are crucial for medical treatments.

Ms. Marowa emphasized the importance of blood type O, often referred to as the “universal donor.” “Blood type O accounts for 48-50% of the population and is always in high demand, especially in emergency situations where crossmatching tests may be limited,” she explained. Due to its universal compatibility, type O blood is frequently needed beyond its normal population range. The NBSZ is particularly encouraging individuals with this blood type to donate, as their contributions play a vital role in saving lives.

Each unit of blood collected is approximately 450 millilitres (ml), making every donation crucial to maintaining the country’s medical supply. The NBSZ and its partners remain committed to ensuring a steady blood supply, and they continue to encourage Zimbabweans to participate in future donation drives.
