Sungura Legend Nicholas Zakaria Appeals for Prayers Amid Deteriorating Health

Zimbabwean music legend Nicholas Zakaria, affectionately known as Senior Lecturer in the Sungura genre, has made a heartfelt plea for prayers from his fans as his health continues to decline. The beloved musician, who has entertained the nation for decades, is currently battling serious health challenges that have forced him to take a step back from live performances.

Zakaria, the founding member of the iconic Khiama Boys, revealed in a recent interview with H-Metro that he has been struggling with complications related to diabetes, hypertension, and muscle cramps. The once-vibrant performer has been unable to attend some of his scheduled gigs, relying instead on his son Franco Slomo and the band to carry the torch during his absence.

“I am very sick Zimbabwe, please pray for me,” Zakaria said. “I just managed to send my band and PA system to our family show with my son Franco.”

His humble plea has touched many across the country, prompting a call for unity among Sungura fans and artists. Franco Slomo, who has been holding fort for his father on stage, urged the community to stop petty feuds and focus on showing love and support for Zakaria.

“Let us stop spending time on social Sungura music wars and spend it on praying for the living legend of this genre,” Slomo said. “Let us not point fingers at each other.”

Slomo’s message was echoed by veteran artist Kiren Zulu, who stressed the importance of solidarity in the music industry, especially in times of illness.

“If one of us gets sick as an artist, we must know and we must visit each other, socialising and listening to their challenges,” Zulu said. “We must assist each other rather than pretend to have loved a person after his or her death by buying food or coffins. John Chibadura never attacked the Chimbetus, Okavango Boys never clashed with Tineyi Chikupo.”

Zakaria’s wife, Margaret Gweshe, had previously disclosed the severity of his condition, explaining how his health had worsened over the past two years. She noted that the ailments have affected his legs and hands, making it difficult for him to perform as he once did.

“My husband’s health deteriorated two years ago, he is no longer the same due to poor health,” she said. “Sometimes he complains of dizziness and he struggles to appear on stage on time during his live performances. We are appealing for help from well-wishers because we are failing to cater for his needs. He is on a special diet.”

Known for his humility, musical wisdom, and groundbreaking contribution to Sungura music, Nicholas Zakaria has mentored some of Zimbabwe’s finest musicians, including Alick Macheso and System Tazvida. His songs have served as both entertainment and life lessons, earning him a revered place in the country’s cultural heritage.

As fans and fellow musicians rally behind him, Zakaria’s legacy stands strong. While his body may be frail, the impact of his music and character remains indelible. His call for prayers is not just a cry for help—it is a reminder of the deep connection between artists and their audiences, and the importance of honouring our legends while they are still with us.
