Harare Province Boxing Association Challenges Zimbabwe Boxing Federation Election Rules

The Harare Province Boxing Association (HPBA) has formally petitioned the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), accusing the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) of conducting upcoming board elections under unfair and “skewed” rules. The HPBA claims these rules are designed to protect the current leadership from being unseated.
In a strongly worded letter dated August 8, addressed to the SRC Director General and copied to the ZBF secretariat, HPBA secretary Kingston Jokonya and chairman Kambuyi Thomas outlined their concerns. They argue that the electoral guidelines and timelines set by the ZBF create an uneven playing field and violate democratic principles within the sport’s national governing body.
The ZBF is scheduled to hold its board elections next month during its Annual General Meeting. However, the HPBA highlights the nomination window of less than seven days, closing on August 15, as “grossly inadequate.” They say this limited timeframe prevents potential candidates from properly preparing submissions, effectively disenfranchising credible aspirants and contradicting the spirit of fair and open participation.
A major issue raised by the HPBA involves additional eligibility requirements included in the election template, specifically clauses 4.1, 6.1, and 6.5. The association claims these stipulations are not supported by the ZBF constitution and are crafted to exclude challengers who could realistically contest the incumbent leadership. The letter describes this as “a deliberate attempt to maintain the status quo,” rather than a simple procedural oversight.
The HPBA also demands the removal of item 4.2 from the election template, which they say unfairly bars boxing figures who have significantly contributed to the sport’s growth but are not currently affiliated with provincial structures.
This dispute adds to ongoing tensions between some provincial associations and the ZBF leadership over governance and transparency. Similar grievances have surfaced in previous election cycles, with accusations that the federation occasionally fails to adhere strictly to its constitution.
The SRC has repeatedly stressed the need for fair and transparent elections across all national sporting bodies in Zimbabwe. It has warned that violations of constitutional procedures could lead to disciplinary measures.
In response, the HPBA has called on the SRC to intervene urgently. They want the nomination period extended, strict enforcement of constitutional compliance, and assurances that the elections will be conducted transparently and inclusively.
“The credibility of these elections is vital, not just for boxing but for sport governance in Zimbabwe as a whole,” the HPBA states. “Office bearers must not use administrative privilege to manipulate the process or retain positions unchallenged.”
With the nomination deadline approaching fast, the SRC faces increasing pressure to act swiftly and prevent another governance scandal within Zimbabwean sport. The commission’s response will be closely watched by stakeholders seeking fairness and accountability in the country’s boxing governance.
