Florah Maphosa’s Blooming Strength Celebrates Women’s Empowerment Through Art

Florah Maphosa, a talented visual artist from Gweru, Zimbabwe, has unveiled her latest painting, Blooming Strength, a vibrant work that captures empowerment and positivity. The painting features a woman with bold Afro hair wearing a turquoise sweater adorned with colorful flowers. A red rose partially obscures her face, adding a layer of mystery and highlighting the beauty within strength. Maphosa explains that the artwork celebrates women’s resilience and the blossoming of confidence and joy.
Currently based in Harare, Maphosa is a student artist in residence at the SwissZimHeritage Gallery and Studio in Domboshava. Her portfolio demonstrates creativity and technical skill, with notable works including Love Veild and Musikana wema Fruits.
Her achievements extend beyond Zimbabwe. Maphosa has exhibited internationally, including through Artgal Online Thundorf in Switzerland. Her works Smile (2025, CHF 2,000) and African Queen (2024, CHF 1,500) were showcased and sold, reflecting both her appeal and commercial recognition. She also placed second in a Midlands competition focusing on climate change, underlining her commitment to global issues.
Maphosa’s talent has been recognized since her school days. She has won awards for her art, exhibited in national galleries such as Bulawayo, and contributed to themed exhibitions including Peripheral Chronicles, Sacrifices, and The Women’s Exhibition. Her work consistently centers women and equality, amplifying their voices and highlighting their experiences, challenges, and triumphs.
The current exhibition, themed Roots and Horizons, aligns with Maphosa’s focus on the intersection of cultural heritage and contemporary society. She uses her art to explore Zimbabwean women’s experiences while preserving cultural identity. Her debut at Siyekhaya Estate Gallery marked a pivotal moment, allowing her to share her vision widely and refine her approach for her upcoming showcase at Art 84 Gallery.
Navigating Zimbabwe’s visual arts space as a female artist, Maphosa has faced challenges but leveraged opportunities for growth and collaboration. She stresses that visual art is a vital medium for raising awareness about women’s empowerment and social justice, inspiring and educating audiences.
Collaboration remains central to her creative journey. As part of a collective of 12 creatives at the Swiss Zim Heritage Vernissage, she emphasizes shared cultural expression as a source of learning and artistic growth. Her mentor, Keith Zenda, has influenced her visual language and style, helping her develop a unique voice.
Looking ahead, Maphosa aims to continue pushing artistic boundaries, exploring new themes, and engaging with international platforms. She aspires to collaborate with diverse artists and serve as an inspiration for emerging creatives, further cementing her position as a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s visual arts scene.
