After a three-week break, 50 Dates in the Theatre, curated by theatre veteran Saimon Mambazo Phiri as part of his 50th birthday celebrations, returns tonight with the 1996 classic play “Zwelethu (Our Land).” The play, originally written by Mike Sabiko, is being re-imagined by Sabela Music Projects and will be performed at the Bulawayo Theatre from 7pm. The production runs from 16 to 20 September.

“Zwelethu” is a ground-breaking work by Siyaya Arts and NASA Theatre, first premiered on April 18, 1996, Zimbabwe’s Independence Day. The play presents a rich narrative driven by imagination and complex characters, exploring themes of power, legacy, and leadership.

Set in the fictional African kingdom of Kwandlala, the story follows Prince Jahana, who seeks to claim his rightful place on the throne from his ailing father, King Sahoho. At the same time, his sister Nomahlubi emerges as a determined leader, committed to guiding her people toward a better future.

The production combines intricate character development with thought-provoking themes, showcasing the enduring power of storytelling and the resilience of the human spirit.

The cast includes notable talents such as musician Madlela Sikhobokhobo, Desire Moyo, Gomez Mehluli Dube, and Richard Masuku. Their performances are expected to bring depth and energy to the beloved classic, offering both nostalgia and a fresh perspective for theatre audiences.

50 Dates in the Theatre continues to highlight Zimbabwean theatrical heritage, providing a platform for timeless stories like “Zwelethu” while celebrating the contributions of artists and creators in the local arts scene.
