Saiiren Emerges as One of Zimbabwe’s Most Distinctive New Voices

Chenesai Chirombe, professionally known as Saiiren, is carving a space for herself in Zimbabwe’s music scene with a unique blend of jazz, alternative indie, and R&B, which she describes as “high vibrational soulful music.” At 26, she is positioning herself as one of the country’s most distinctive emerging voices.
Saiiren’s musical journey began in childhood. She joined her school choir at age six, laying the foundation for a lifelong engagement with music. This early experience has evolved into a personal and creative practice, with song ideas drawn from her emotions and life experiences. “Just allow that to flow into my music,” she explains.
Her creative process starts with a beat, either composed by herself or provided by collaborators. From there, she refines the lyrics, crafts a hook, and arranges the track to produce music she hopes is instantly recognisable.
Saiiren cites inspiration from R&B and alternative artists, including Nina Simone, Billie Eilish, Willow Smith, Jhené Aiko, and RAYE. She credits their unique styles with shaping her approach to creating a sound that is distinct and immediately identifiable. This cross-genre influence is evident in her vocal timbre, songwriting, and her do-it-yourself approach to production.
One of her standout works is Show Me, a collaboration co-written with Simba’rashé during his recent visit to Zimbabwe. Saiiren describes the track as her favourite due to the intentionality and care invested in its creation.
Live performance and ritual play a central role in Saiiren’s practice. She prioritises rehearsal and incorporates meditation and prayer with her band before taking the stage. She cites her appearance at Miombo Festival this year as a major milestone in her live career.
Saiiren is open about the challenges of the music industry. She acknowledges creative setbacks, writer’s block, and business frustrations as part of her journey. Her response involves grounding, prayer, and patience. “To be patient… this creative industry is not a quick and easy one to break through — you truly have to have resilience,” she says.
Building a fan base is a relational process for Saiiren. She focuses on connecting with listeners, being transparent about her craft, and appreciating her supporters. “I know the people who have always supported me, strangers who I’ve never met and they ride for me in an unbelievable way and I always stay connected with them,” she explains.
Currently, Saiiren is working on an EP she believes will reflect who she is now. She sees the coming years as a period of artistic and personal growth, aiming to expand her live performances and explore new opportunities regionally and internationally.
Saiiren’s dedication to authenticity, creativity, and connection positions her as a rising talent in Zimbabwe’s music scene, one whose work promises to resonate well beyond her current audience.
