Zimbabwe U19s Show Fight Through Chiwaula Despite Heavy Defeat to India

A fighting half century from Leeroy Chiwaula provided a rare highlight for Zimbabwe Under 19s during their ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026 Super Six clash against a strong India Under 19s side at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Tuesday. Despite his determined effort, the hosts suffered a heavy 204 run defeat after being outplayed by a disciplined and powerful Indian team.

After winning the toss, Zimbabwe opted to field but were placed under early pressure. India raced to 44 runs inside the first four overs before Aaron George was dismissed for 23. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre then steadied the innings with a productive second wicket stand that carried the score to 100. Sooryavanshi struck a fluent 52 while Mhatre added 21 before both fell in the 11th over to Tatenda Chimugoro.

Zimbabwe found better rhythm after the powerplay but India remained in control. Vihaan Malhotra anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 109 from 107 balls. He shared a crucial fifth wicket partnership of 113 with Abhigyan Kundu, who contributed a well paced 61 from 62 deliveries. Late contributions from the lower order pushed India to a commanding total of 352 for eight. Chimugoro led the Zimbabwe bowling effort with three wickets for 49 runs from eight overs.

In reply, Zimbabwe’s chase began poorly. Opener Nathaniel Hlabangana was trapped lbw by RS Ambrish with just the second ball of the innings. Dhruv Patel and Brandon Senzere were dismissed cheaply, leaving the hosts struggling at 24 for three in the ninth over. The early damage placed Zimbabwe under immediate pressure against a sharp Indian attack.

Chiwaula then showed character and composure to rebuild the innings. He shared a 69 run partnership for the fourth wicket with Kian Blignaut, who batted patiently for his 37 from 73 balls. Chiwaula later combined with Chimugoro in a positive fifth wicket stand worth 49 runs. Chimugoro scored 29 from 29 deliveries, striking two sixes and a boundary.

Chiwaula’s resistance ended when he lifted a catch to mid off. His 62 from 77 balls included one six and seven boundaries and highlighted his growing maturity at Under 19 level. The score stood at 142 for five at that stage but the innings quickly unraveled.

The Zimbabwe tail collapsed against Udhav Mohan and Ayush Mhatre. Chimugoro fell for 29 before the final five wickets fell for just six runs. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 148, with Mohan and Mhatre each claiming three wickets. Despite the result, Chiwaula’s fighting knock stood out as a promising sign for Zimbabwe’s future at youth level.
