Outgoing Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Queen Reflects on Transformative Reign Ahead of Harare Crowning Ceremony

Outgoing Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, Nomqhele Sisa Nkomo, is preparing to hand over her crown at a pageant set for Harare on Saturday, marking the end of a reign she describes as deeply transformative. The young titleholder, who is currently a journalism student at the National University of Science and Technology, says her time in the role reshaped how she views culture, leadership, and national identity. She explained that the experience pushed her beyond beauty standards and into meaningful work focused on tourism development and youth empowerment. As she steps aside, she reflects on a journey that combined personal growth with national representation. The upcoming crowning event signals both an end and a new beginning for the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe platform.

During her reign, Nkomo focused on initiatives that linked tourism with community development, placing strong emphasis on cultural storytelling and youth engagement. She used her platform to highlight Zimbabwe’s identity through creative expression, blending media, fashion, and poetry to promote local heritage. She said one of her most meaningful achievements was using storytelling to showcase Zimbabwe in a way that felt authentic and relatable. This approach allowed her to connect tourism with everyday culture rather than limiting it to formal promotion campaigns. Her work positioned her as a young advocate for creative tourism promotion that speaks directly to communities.

Nkomo said the journey helped her grow in multiple areas beyond her public role, including confidence, discipline, resilience, and emotional intelligence. She explained that pageantry challenged her to balance visibility with responsibility while maintaining personal focus. She also represented Zimbabwe internationally in Malaysia, where she competed in a global pageant and secured a Top 10 placement in the talent category. That experience, she said, gave her a stronger sense of national pride and global awareness. She carried Zimbabwe’s identity with purpose, ensuring that her performance and presence reflected the country’s cultural richness. The international exposure also strengthened her belief in the power of pageantry as a global platform.

Despite the glamour associated with pageants, Nkomo revealed that her reign came with demanding challenges that tested her endurance. She had to balance academic responsibilities, personal commitments, and national duties at the same time. She described periods of exhaustion, pressure, and self-doubt, but said she remained focused on her purpose throughout her journey. Support systems played a key role in helping her stay grounded during difficult moments. These experiences shaped her understanding of leadership and taught her the importance of emotional balance under public pressure.

Nkomo strongly believes that pageantry is more than physical presentation, describing it as a powerful tool for tourism promotion and national storytelling. She said the platform allows young women to shape how Zimbabwe is perceived on both local and international stages. In her view, beauty competitions can be used to promote culture, heritage, and community development when guided by purpose. She also noted that her international participation helped reopen global opportunities for future Miss Tourism Zimbabwe representatives. This, she believes, will encourage stronger representation of Zimbabwe on global platforms going forward.

As she prepares to hand over the crown, Nkomo has shared advice for the next titleholder, urging her to embrace the role with intention and commitment. She emphasized that the crown carries responsibility beyond appearance, requiring service, discipline, and dedication. She encouraged her successor to understand the long-term impact of the role and to use it as a tool for meaningful change. Her message highlights the importance of purpose-driven leadership within the pageant industry. She hopes her successor will continue building on the foundation she has helped strengthen.

Meanwhile, excitement is building ahead of the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe pageant set to take place in Harare, where 16 contestants will compete for the crown. The finalists include Lisa Kwainona, Beautify Siziba, Vimbainashe Mutyavaviri, Zanele Moyo, Rutendo Magade, Zandile Sibanda, Ropafadzo P Manyanga, Alexis Thuthani, Ruvarashe Jane Darare, Miriraiishe Magebede, Petronella Phiri, Letween Pikire, Noxolo Dube, Kathleen Chaziya, Mavhu Alexandra Kaseke, and Silence Tadzembwa.
