Joyce Chimanye Reflects on Legacy and Achievements as Former Chair of the Fashion Council of Zimbabwe

Joyce Chimanye, a seasoned fashion designer and former chair of the Fashion Council of Zimbabwe (FCoZ), has left an indelible mark on the country’s fashion sector, driving it forward with vision and purpose over the past three decades. As Chimanye prepares to step down and hand over the reins to Patience Lusengo, the incoming chairperson of the FCoZ, she recently took the opportunity to reflect on her remarkable journey and the major strides the Council has made under her leadership.
Throughout her tenure, Chimanye’s efforts have been pivotal in shaping the future of Zimbabwean fashion, ensuring that the sector gains the recognition and support it deserves both locally and internationally. She highlighted several significant milestones achieved by the FCoZ board during her time in charge, including:
One of the most notable achievements was the establishment of a vibrant community for Zimbabwean fashion creatives, both in Zimbabwe and the diaspora. This community has created a united voice aimed at promoting, supporting, and fostering growth for all participants in the Zimbabwean fashion ecosystem.
Another important initiative introduced under Chimanye’s leadership was the FCoZ Meet and Greet Events. These events have provided a platform for Zimbabwean fashion creatives to come together, network, and share ideas, further strengthening the collective power of the industry.
Chimanye also pointed to the launch of the WearZim campaign as another significant accomplishment. The campaign, which encourages Zimbabweans to support local fashion by wearing Zimbabwean brands every Friday, has played a vital role in promoting local fashion and fostering a sense of national pride in the country’s creative industry.
Beyond local initiatives, Chimanye emphasized the Council’s strategic collaborations with various stakeholders, including the Government of Zimbabwe, the private sector, civil society organizations, and creatives. These partnerships have resulted in numerous opportunities for Zimbabwean fashion creatives, such as participation in ZimTrade workshops, exhibitions, the SADC Industrialisation Week Exhibition and Fashion Show, So Far Sounds, the Edgars Fashion Extravaganza, the Herald Lifestyle Fashion Show, the Zim Afro T10 Fashion Show, and the Africa Fashion Reception in Ethiopia.
Chimanye also highlighted FCoZ’s role in providing educational opportunities for aspiring and established fashion creatives. Through FCoZ’s Creatives Sessions, workshops were hosted, covering a wide range of essential topics like fashion design, pattern making, garment construction, quality control, branding, marketing, and makeup. These workshops, funded by FCoZ in partnership with industry experts, have equipped countless creatives with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the competitive world of fashion.
One of the most significant accomplishments during Chimanye’s leadership was the collaboration with Edgars Stores to stock local fashion brands, providing local designers with much-needed exposure and opportunities for growth. This partnership has contributed to the cultural preservation of Zimbabwe’s fashion identity while also adding value to the industry through the visibility of local talent.
As Chimanye prepares to pass the baton to Patience Lusengo, her tenure will undoubtedly be remembered for the transformative impact it has had on Zimbabwe’s fashion sector. Her leadership has not only advanced the fashion industry but has also paved the way for future generations of designers and creatives to thrive. With Chimanye’s legacy firmly in place, the future of Zimbabwean fashion looks brighter than ever.
